War-Den found this oil painting at a house clearance sale in Augsburg Germany. There is no doubt the oil on canvas has been re-framed, but the painting itself is old. Signed and dated “Stahl 33”, its not known if this is Friedrich Stahl as there were many oil painters named Stahl very active in the early 1930s Germany. Augsburg is close to the birthplace of Streicher – Fleinhausen. This painting was sold to War-Den as an early political portrait of Julius Streicher. To include the frame, it measures 610 mm X 530 mm.
Streicher was a German publicist and politically active in the very early days of the Nazi Party, a very early friend of Hitler. He was founder and publisher of the virulently antisemetic newspaper Der Sturmer.
After the war, Streicher was convicted of crimes against humanity, during the Nuremburg trials. He was sentenced to death by hanging by the Nuremberg Tribunal.
