Set of 15 Postcards from the Great German Art Exhibition 1937-44

Set of 15 postcards depicting various exhibits from the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst, Munich 1937-44. Works by Truppe, Breker, Thorak and Liebermann amongst them.

On 18th July 1937 Hitler officially opened the Great German Art Exhibition at the House of German Art, Munich, a new museum designed by architect Paul Ludwig Troost (1873-1934). It was the first of eight annual exhibitions of Nazi approved ‘German art’.

Four of the cards are unused originals published by Photo Hoffmann, Munchen, Friedrichstrasse 34. Heinrich Hoffmann was Hitlers appointed personal photographer.

The remaining eleven cards are certainly old and have the wording “Alleiniges Reproduktionsrecht” – English translation as “Sole right of Reproduction”.

Certainly all the cards are old, and without doubt the four Hoffmann cards are Third Reich period. The other cards may well be under licence of the exhibition and issued at the time, unfortunately I don’t have the knowledge on these to determine, so the set is priced accordingly.

Really nice set of cards with only one written on as used.
