The SS Handschar Division were a mountain infantry unit of the Waffen SS during WW2, although never officially part of the German Wehrmacht. It was active between 1943 and 1945 and was the first non-Germanic SS division which marked the begining of the SS into a multi-ethnic military force.

Himmler was inspired by the noted successes of the Muslim Bosnian-Herzegovinian Forces in World War I. He “endeavored to restore what he called ‘an old Austrian’ tradition by reviving the Bosnian regiments of the former Austro-Hungarian Army in the form of a Bosnian Muslim SS Division”. Hitler formally approved the project in mid-February 1943.
