During World War II Heinrich Schroeteler commanded U-1023 & U-667. He received the Knights Cross for his service. Schroeteler was born in Essen in 1915, one of eleven children. He was credited with damaging one merchant ship, the British steam merchant Riverton, and sinking one warship, the Norwegian minesweeper HNoMS NYMS-382. The sinking took place on 7 May 1945, three days after the U-boats had been ordered to surrender.
Heinrich Schroeteler survived the war and later pursued his first career as an artist.
The photo shows Schroeteler returning from a patrol with U-1023, the U-Boat emblem of the crossed hammers can be clearly seen on his commanders cap. The photo is postcard size, the signature is very clear in black ink. Including frame it measures overall 24 cms x 18 cms.
A nice photo in a pose typical of the celebrity status the U-Boat Commanders held, with very clear autograph in black ink.
