The First Class Iron Cross was awarded to those who had previously received the 2nd class iron cross, but in addition performed 3 to 5 pure acts of bravery in the face of the enemy. An EK1 could be awarded directly from a single act of heroism considered well above the usual call of duty within the armed forces of Germany of course as long as the recipient already held the EK2.

This is a very fine example EK1 maker Willhelm Deumer, the only issue with the box is that it has two small tears at each corner and the hinge silk binding is also torn. The rest of the box is in good condition with only small areas of scuffing and totally free from signs of chipping.
